Editorial Guidelines

At CalorieData, accuracy is our foundation. We are committed to providing nutrition data you can trust for making informed dietary decisions. Our editorial guidelines ensure that every nutrient value, food comparison, and educational article meets rigorous standards for accuracy and transparency.

Official Data Sources

All nutrition data on CalorieData is sourced from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the definitive authority on food composition in the United States:

USDA FoodData Central

FoodData Central is the official USDA food composition database, maintained by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). This database represents decades of scientific analysis and is the same source used by healthcare professionals, registered dietitians, food manufacturers, and research institutions worldwide.

The database integrates multiple USDA data sources including SR Legacy (Standard Reference), Foundation Foods, FNDDS (Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies), and the Global Branded Food Products Database.

We do not use crowdsourced nutrition data, user-submitted values, or unverified third-party sources. Every nutrient value displayed on our site can be traced back to official USDA records.

Accuracy Standards

We maintain strict accuracy standards throughout our data pipeline and content creation process:

Direct Source Integration

Nutrition data is retrieved directly from USDA APIs and official data exports. We do not manually transcribe values, eliminating transcription errors.

Standardized Units

All values are presented in consistent, standardized units. Macronutrients are displayed in grams, micronutrients in milligrams or micrograms as appropriate, and calories use the standard kilocalorie measurement.

Serving Size Transparency

We clearly display the serving size for all nutrition data. Per-100-gram values are provided as a standard reference for accurate food comparisons.

Missing Data Disclosure

When specific nutrient data is not available for a food, we indicate this clearly rather than displaying zeros, which could be misleading.

Data Update Process

The USDA continuously updates FoodData Central with new foods, revised nutrient values, and improved analytical methods. We maintain our database to reflect these updates:

  • Quarterly Database Refresh: Our complete nutrition database is refreshed quarterly to incorporate the latest USDA data releases, typically within 30 days of USDA publication.
  • Priority Updates: When USDA issues corrections to commonly-referenced foods or significant analytical improvements, we prioritize updating those records.
  • New Food Additions: Newly published foods in FoodData Central are added to our database during our quarterly refresh cycle.
  • Historical Data: We maintain records of when data was last updated so users can assess data currency.

Verification Methods

We employ multiple verification methods to ensure data integrity:

Automated Validation

Our data pipeline includes automated checks for outliers, impossible values, and formatting inconsistencies before data is published to the site.

Cross-Reference Audits

We periodically audit random samples of our displayed data against source USDA records to verify accuracy throughout our pipeline.

Calculation Verification

Derived values such as per-serving calculations and food comparisons are verified using established formulas consistent with FDA labeling guidelines.

User Feedback Integration

User-reported discrepancies are investigated promptly. When verified, corrections are implemented within 48 hours.

Editorial Content Standards

Beyond raw nutrition data, our educational content and guides adhere to strict editorial standards:

  • Evidence-Based Information: Dietary guidance is based on current scientific consensus, referencing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, peer-reviewed research, and established nutrition science.
  • No Fad Diet Promotion: We present nutrition information objectively without promoting specific diets, weight loss programs, or unproven nutritional claims.
  • Clear Attribution: When we reference specific studies or guidelines, we cite the source so readers can verify information independently.
  • Balanced Perspective: We acknowledge the complexity of nutrition science and avoid presenting preliminary findings as established fact.

Corrections Policy

We are committed to correcting errors promptly and transparently:

  • Data Errors: Incorrect nutrient values are corrected immediately upon verification. If the error was significant, we note the correction date on the affected page.
  • Calculation Errors: Errors in derived calculations (per-serving values, comparisons) are corrected and the calculation methodology is reviewed.
  • Editorial Errors: Factual errors in educational content are corrected with a notation indicating the nature and date of the correction.
  • Reporting Errors: Users can report suspected errors through our contact page. We investigate all reports and respond within 3 business days.

Editorial Independence

CalorieData maintains complete editorial independence:

  • We do not accept payment to feature, promote, or modify information about specific foods or brands.
  • Advertising on our site does not influence our data presentation or editorial content.
  • We have no affiliations with food manufacturers, diet programs, or supplement companies.
  • Our comparison tools present objective data without favoring particular products.
